Ferrovie Nord Milano (presently FNM) was created in 1877 to build and operate the railway lines in the Lombardy area. The railway network was developed in the North-West of Lombardy to connect Milan with Novara, Varese, Laveno, Como and Erba-Asso.
In 1985, after the Company was transformed into a holding and the Lombardy Region became a shareholder of Ferrovie Nord, Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio was set up, the operational subsidiary company in charge of rail traffic.
In 1993, Ferrovie Nord Milano acquired the right to manage the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo railway line.
In 2004, in order to comply with the principle of separating network from service, two distinct companies were created: Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio to run the network and Ferrovie Nord Milano Trasporti to transport passengers. The same year, the reorganization of company structure continued with the creation of Ferrovie Nord Cargo (now NORDCARGO), which is the freight transport company.
On 29 April 2006, a new corporate identity for the FNM Group companies was decided and Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio became FERROVIENORD. At the same time, Ferrovie Nord Milano Trasporti became LeNORD.
